This project was a graduate-level assignment focusing on large-space AR interaction. Unlike virtual reality (VR), which emphasizes immersion and detachment from the physical environment, augmented reality (AR) derives half of its charm from the real world. When virtual imagery falls upon familiar surroundings, the boundary between the real and the virtual blurs into a dreamlike mix.

The project augments a real architectural space. The first-floor lobby of the College of Design and Innovation is a familiar place to students and faculty: beneath its arched roof, the open space rises three stories high, spacious enough to host many activities, from academic conferences to casual badminton games. But we want more than that—AR technology can add new possibilities to this space.

Using Unity AR Foundation and the spatial scanning and recognition features of the Immersal SDK, we overlaid multiple virtual scenes onto the real-world environment of the college lobby. With a "portal" approach, we enabled seamless teleportation between different virtual scenes.
